Newly erected steel and concrete foundations at four stations are signaling what’s in store for passengers when New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Rail Program upgrades are completed and CTrail Hartford Line service is launched in 2018.
New stations in Berlin, Meriden and Wallingford are under construction and include high-level platforms. Union Station in Hartford has had its platform upgraded to accommodate high-level boarding. New high-level platforms facilitate level boarding so that passengers will not have to use stairs to get on and off trains. High-level platforms make it easier for all passengers to board the train, especially those toting luggage, pushing baby strollers or using wheelchairs.
Platforms at the new stations are being constructed with a snow melt system. All stations will have a charging station for electric vehicles.
Other station improvements will include a Passenger Information Display System – with digital display signs as well as an audio system that indicate when the next train will arrive. This system can also issue security and delay messages to passengers. New benches, trash and recycling receptacles and an emergency (blue-light) phones will be installed at all stations.
The structural steel skeleton of the stair/elevator towers and the pedestrian walkways, which provide passengers the ability to safely cross from one side of the station to the other above the tracks, are already in place in Berlin, Meriden and Wallingford.
The existing historic station in Berlin is also being renovated as part of the Program and its waiting room will serve future rail passengers.
Meriden’s existing station has been torn down and will be replaced by the new station. The Wallingford stop will be relocated north from its current location at Hall Avenue to a new station location being constructed near North Colony, Parker St. and North Cherry Streets. The existing station building, owned by the Town of Wallingford, will continue to function as a community center.
Hartford’s new high-level platform was completed in June, and trains will soon begin to stop at this platform. The upgrades at Berlin, Meriden and Wallingford stations should be completed by spring 2017. CTrail Hartford Line rail service is planned to begin serving these new stations in January 2018.

WALLINGFORD — Work began Saturday to install a temporary platform at the train station on Hall Avenue, prompting detours in the area.
John Bernick, assistant rail administrator for the state Department of Transportation, said the asphalt platform will be removed to make way for a second track, which will be constructed this summer. A temporary wooden platform will be installed in the meantime.
“When they’re ready for the track, they just have to remove a temporary platform, drop a track in,” Bernick said.
An under drain will also be installed beneath the temporary platform, he said.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Vermont Agency of Transportation will air its findings on a study to expand regional intercity passenger rail service at a public meeting on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, 60 Congress Street, second floor Springfield, MA. The study, known as the Northern New England Intercity Rail Initiative (NNEIRI), examined the potential to expand passenger rail service to serve large and small communities along a 470-mile corridor across New England, Quebec, and New York.
The proposed service would provide both long-distance and regional passenger train services. Covering longer distances than commuter trains, these trains would connect to a large network of metropolitan areas and small towns, including the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield rail corridor. Proposed service improvements include one roundtrip train between Montreal and New Haven, one roundtrip train between Montreal and Boston, and eight roundtrip trains between Boston and New Haven via Springfield. Each train would run local service, stopping at each station, with speed improvements up to 79 mph.
